It might have looked like an excuse to escape the wet winter weather, but Jervis Bay triathletes proved their sporting prowess was certainly not on holiday with strong performances at the Cairns Ironman and 70.3 on Sunday.

Club president, Tony Lim, capped off a successful season of racing with a bronze medal in Urban Hotel Group 70.3 event.

Tony managed a 6:04:51, placing third in the men’s 60-64 age group.

Former Basin View resident, Renae Watkins, put in a sterling performance to finish in 5:56:00 in her first long distance triathlon. She placed 27th in the 35-39 age group and says she’s now looking at the full Ironman.

Vincentia’s Tony McGowan also did well finishing in 7:08:16 to place 9th in the 55-59 category.

The girls also shone in the full Ironman event with Paula Luke the fastest Jervis Bay Triathlon Club member. Paula showed both speed and endurance, finishing the gruelling 3.8 km swim/180km ride/42km run in 12:35:43. She placed 13th in the 35-39 age group.

JB’s Mr Ironman, Tibor Slezak, was hot on her heels finishing in 12:38:49 while Jason Luke finished in 13:14:55.
